The Paediatric Observation Priority Score (POPS) was developed in Leicester in 2009 by Dr Damian Roland and Dr Ffion Davies. The tool allows hospital staff of any experience level to risk assess children attending emergency departments, using routinely collected data. Very sick children can then be identified and prioritised for treatment, while healthy children can be redirected away from specialist hospital paediatric services.
