The Clinical Scholar Awards 2014/15 will:

  • Enhance the Clinical Scholar’s ability to compete successfully for the next stage of the Clinical Academic Pathway
  • Offer the opportunity of 1:1 mentorship from a highly experienced clinical academic
  • Include a £7,500 grant provided to the clinician’s organisation to support towards backfill and expenses

Two separate award schemes are available in the 2014/15 programme:

Clinical Scholar Bronze

  • Suitable for clinicians without formal training or qualifications in research, providing support to apply for a Master’s in Research (MRes)
  • Offers the opportunity to carry out a small piece of academic research in an area relevant to your clinical practice
  • Provides 48 days of release, to be agreed with your employing organisation, to carry out research between November 2014 and April 2015
  • Includes a structured educational programme covering searching academic literature, developing a research question and methodology, critical analysis, report writing and presentation skills
  • Gives experience in producing a 5,000 to 7,000 word dissertation, a 3,000 word reflective piece and a 20 minute presentation on your research project

Clinical Scholar Silver

  • Suitable for clinicians who already have an MRes or equivalent qualification, providing support to apply for a PhD
  • Offers the opportunity to have protected time to produce a PhD proposal, including ethics
  • Provides 48 days of release to be agreed with your employing organisation to carry out research between November 2014 and July 2015
  • Includes a bespoke educational programme tailored to the identified training needs of each individual
  • Gives experience in producing a literature review and portfolio presentation relating to the PhD proposal
